今日のTAセクションでは第２次世界大戦の勃発の理由、冷戦の始まりと終わり、テロリズムを基本的な理論はどう説明するか、という盛りだくさんの内容。でもレクチャーでやったことをそのまま繰り返しても面白くないし、時間的にも無理だということで、WWIIの理論的説明だけ皆で復習して、そのあと関連の新聞記事二つを読ませてディベートということにした。新聞記事は、アメリカの覇権主義をどう解釈するかについて、一つは「benevolent（善意的な？） hegemony」だから我々はこのまま突き進むんだ！というKaganの読み物、もう一つはFrancis Fukuyamaがそういう意見を批判的に分析したもの（failure of benevolent hegemony）だった。
すこーし難しかったようで最初の方は発言が控えめだったが、質問の内容をどんどん具体化させていくとぼちぼち意見が聞こえてきた。まず第一の反応は「生まれたときから気がつけば世界はアメリカの覇権下だったから、いいとか悪いとか考えた事ない」とか「アメリカの覇権以外の世界が想像つかない」とか。おいおい、と思い「じゃ、アメリカの覇権はいつか終わると思う？」と質問したところ、私としては「いつ」は問題だとしてもYesという反応が大半だろうと予想したのに、一つ目の授業では約三分の一、二つ目では、19人中3人！！えええーーー！！どうやらアメリカ覇権は永遠に続くと思っている人が多いみたい。理由は様々でリアリスト的、リベラル的な要素がごっちゃになっており、本人たちにもまだまとまった意見になっていないが、とりあえず感覚として「終わらない」らしい。更につっこんで聞くと、「アメリカのモラルは今までの覇権の中で一番いいから、このまま続くんだ」から始まり、「アメリカの理想は他の文化より好ましいんだ」という意見にまでいたった。「アメリカのモラルは一番だから」の部分で「じゃなんでそんなに犯罪率高いの？なんで貧富の差が激しいの？タリバンをサポートして見捨てたり？イランのシャーを支援したり？」とつっこみそうになったが、話がそれそうだったのでやめた。そういう「アメリカっていい事してる！」的視点をに疑問を唱えた生徒は約一名。もちろん黙っていた生徒たちの中で反対意見もあっただろうし、アメリカ覇権を肯定的にとらえる生徒の間でも、「モラルがいいから」派と「色んな文化に寛容だから」派があり、彼らの思想を一般化するのは危険だ。こういう「自分の国のスーパーパワーを分析しろ」という難しい問いかけはアメリカ人だけに向けられるし、簡単に無責任だ、エスノセントリックだ、と批判されて大変だな、と思う一方、確かに「アメリカ人のロジック」が（個々人のせいでなくても）往々にして強制力を持つので、慎重に考えてほしいとも願うのである。とにかく、今日は思わずコンストラクティビスト的な視点に立ち戻り、育つ時代やところが違えば常識って違うもんだ、とつくづく感じたのであった。
